By the similarity of their names, some people thought that coal and charcoal are the same types of material that can produce heat or power. While actually, there are big differences between the two materials and even the types of each. What are actually coal and charcoal? Read below to know more!

Coal vs. Charcoal

Both coal and charcoal are carbon compounds that can be burned to be turned into fuel. Although the names are similar, coal and charcoal have no relation to each other. Coal is a natural mineral made by fossils that are formed over million years under high temperature and pressure below the earth’s crust. Decayed plants and animals were going through what is called coalification for millions of years before they are mined and used as a natural energy source. Hence the natural main source and natural process, coal is a non-renewable fuel source.

On the other hand, charcoal is a type of fuel produced by partial combustion of combustible substances. It is man-made and can use any source such as wood, bamboo, coconut, and even animal bones. Small charcoal cubes are produced through a heating process that is called pyrolysis. The process will decompose organic matter and water at high temperatures in a limited supply of air.

Types of Coal

Coal as fuels is mainly used for industrial purposes such as heating systems and power plants. There are four classifications of coal that are based on their rank. The types of coal are:

  1. Anthracite

This highest rank of coal is hard, brittle, and often referred to as hard coal. Anthracite contains a high percentage of fixed carbon and a low percentage of volatile matter.

   2. Bituminous

This type of coal is also called lump coal. Bituminous coal usually has a high heating value and mostly is used in electricity generation and steel making.

   3. Subbituminous

This type of coal is black and dull. Subbituminous coal has a low-to-moderate heating value and it is mainly used for electricity generation like bituminous.

   4. Lignite

The lowest grade of coal has the least concentration of carbon. Lignite coal is also well-known as brown coal that has a low heating value and a high moisture content.

Types of Charcoal

Charcoal can easily find everywhere. There are now a lot of charcoal factories and charcoal suppliers around the world. Anyone wants to buy charcoal at the supermarket or even buy through a charcoal company if they want to buy in a large amount. Each type of charcoal has its own characteristics based on the purposes and the ingredients. The types of charcoal are:

  1. Lump Charcoal

Also known as natural charcoal, this type is one of the best charcoal as it burns quicker and at a higher temperature than the other kinds of charcoal. Natural lump charcoal is made by slowly burning pieces of wood until all the natural chemicals, sap, and moisture get out of the wood.

   2. Binchotan

Binchotan charcoal is also known as Japanese smokeless charcoal. It is traditionally made from any part of Japanese oak trees and burned at very low temperatures for one to three weeks to reach the right consistency.

   3. Coconut Charcoal

Coconut charcoal is actually very eco-friendly and sustainable as charcoal. It has a stronger and longer burning time than the usual charcoal. Usually, coconut charcoal price per kg is also cheaper than the other types of charcoal.

    4. Hardwood Charcoal

Hardwood charcoal is similar to lump charcoal, but this one tends to burn slower. Hardwood charcoal mostly used for grilling and sometimes is made specially as restaurant-grade charcoal used by professional chefs.

    5. Smokeless Charcoal

Smokeless charcoal is made to fulfill the needs of modern houses that are rarely equipped with fireplaces and places where smoke and pollution are banned. This charcoal is made from powdered charcoal and doesn’t emit visibly smoke.
